The Return of the Hellespont

After a 2 year Hellespont hiatus, I have (temporarily..hopefully) ceased to trot the globe in an attempt to stay put in one place for longer than 9 months, and to focus on the making of fun stuff.  I have seen more than 20 countries on 4 different continents in that time, and I would like to share some of my findings from one of the most surprising countries I've visited; Mexico.

You're probably thinking "Aye?  What's so surprising about Mexico?!?"  I'll tell you what surprised me... I didn't die.  My father used to use Mexico as a threat when I was a child; he'd say "you better stop doing that, or I'll send you to Mexico", at which I'd scream out in burning terror and plead with him not to send me to the land of convicts who used children's corpses as drug mules.  I can't remember what kind of movies my parents let me watch as a child, but they did NOT paint Mexico in a very good light.  I peed myself at the very thought of going there.

Thankfully, I grew the eff up and developed a desire to visit countries that the majority of the people I knew deemed dangerous for travelers.  I don't have a death wish, I just like finding things out for myself.

My conclusion of Mexico - I have never been more terrified in my life.  Waking up with a semi-automatic weapon in your face every half an hour at security stops while travelling between cities on coaches ain't fun.  Neither is having to RUN after withdrawing money from ATMs in certain areas.  But, I've been twice now.  The food is delectable, the ruins are fascinating and Oaxaca (a small town in the state of Oaxaca, south of Mexico city) has the best market I've ever been to in any country EVER in the history of my being.

These tin decorations were handmade in Oaxaca, and can be purchased from future Hellespont stalls or in Miss Tiki's 'AHOY CUTIE' shop located at Shop 3, 214 K'rd, Auckland.

But is it Art?

I remember hating that book when I read it at uni, but I thought I'd reference it anyway.  It's relevant.  Somewhat.  Not really, actually.

In the magical, sunny-land, (middle-aged and middle-class) fairy-gnome village of Devonport, lies a gallery full of treats and treasures made especially for you.  Really.  The Depot Artspace is an awesome gallery dedicated to providing artists and wanna-bes wall space to exhibit their work to the public.  The glorious Laurel was drunk enough to take my Octolove series and a few other little bits to display and sell in their art & object section for members, Front Room.

Come and have a look!

Trade Me: where the cool kids lurk

I chose to list items on Trademe under the member name thesteyne because I'm used to using it, it's fairly easy, and people in New Zealand need cool stuff.  It started slowly but has picked up since uploading new items, and I've now got a good idea of what sells online.  There are a few pieces in the Faces of Death Series, the best seller by far is 'Our Lady of Death' cameo set in a large gunmetal locket.  Here are a few pieces currently selling on TM, I hope you like.

'Our Lady of Death'
Large Gunmetal Victorian Cameo Locket
(currently out of stock)

'Our Lady of Death'
Small Gunmetal Victorian Cameo Locket
'Portrait of Death'
Gunmetal Regal setting Ring

A few more pieces were added just before Halloween; a Summer-Brite Our Lady of Death, a friendly vintage monster, a glorious pile of guts and some pearly-white eye balls.

'Summer-Brite Our Lady of Death'
Pink and Lavender Resin Cameo Necklace
with 18 inch Antique Silver Chain
'Worm-Blood Orange Monster Head'
Vintage Resin Cab Brooch
'No Guts No Glory'
Polymer Brooch with Swarovski Crystals
'Oogly Eyeball'
Polymer Ring available in grim-green,
blank-blue and burnt-brown

Around Halloween I momentarily became obsessed with (instead of the usual interested in) Dia De Los Muertos.  A few pieces came out of this with the help of my awesome flatback sugar skulls, and I feel that many more will arise as I have a TON of Virgin Mary / Mexi / Sugarskull stuff to play with now. Woot.

Sugar skull and Milagros
Plastic and Gunmetal Bracelet
(yet to be listed)

Other pieces on the TM train are from a fairly short lived Kitsch Pirate series, with a few one-offs thrown in:

I have a few more pieces that I have yet to list on Trade Me, so I'll update soon!

Helles Pontaaaah!

It has been a good few months since I first started buying bits of resin and brass from online sites, started cutting and glueing, and had to remember how the fark to use polymer clay.  I've had a heap of fun on my Saturday-jewellery-making-days and now have a few pieces I'm almost semi proud of.  The jewellery, so far,  ranges from bright and kitsch, bloody and splatty, to just plain silly.  I hope you like!
